I walked into our local Hastings (closed now) and bought my first 3 disc golf discs. I had no idea what I was looking at or looking for. I browsed for a few minutes and exchanged some questions with my buddy Zach. He was new to the sport also and purchasing his first discs. Here is what I left the store with.
A Discraft Soft Magnet, Pro-D Buzzz and Pro-D Force.
Not terrible but not great either. The Magnet and Buzzz were winners. The Force, not so much. I quickly learned what an overstable disc was and at the time I struggled to to throw the Buzzz. That just comes with being new. Every new player gets a case of the “pop-ups”. There are several options available from all the manufacturers for your disc purchases and with that said here is a list of discs we recommend for new players. Snag one from each list and get out to the course!
Putters
Really any putter works but ensure it has more of a neutral flight.
- Dynamic Discs Judge
- Dynamic Discs Warden
- Discraft Challenger
- Innova Discs Aviar
- Discmania P2
Mid Range
Again, neutral flight. Learn to throw your mids correctly first!
- Discraft Buzzz
- Innova Discs Mako
- Dynamic Discs Truth
- Prodigy Discs M4
- Latitude 64 Claymore
Drivers
Everybody wants to throw far. But new players need to avoid the high speed driver. You should start with something stable but slower speed. In the 7-9 speed area works well and as you develop your skill you can move on to faster and more stable discs. I recommend the following drivers for brand new players.
- Discmania FD
- Innova Discs Teebird
- Innova Discs TL3
- Latitude 64 Saint Pro
- DGA Pipeline
- Dynamic Discs Getaway
There you have it. You should be able to pick one disc from each list and enjoy playing disc golf. Try to be patient with yourself as you develop your skills and hold off on trying new discs until you’ve really mastered these. Be careful, it’s easy to fall in love with the sport and before you know it have hundreds of discs in your collection.
